We sent a proposal through three letters addressed to the Valletta Local Council, together with the Government and the Opposition, so that this Abattoir located right in a residential zone be given over for independent living for the elderly who are still in a condition to live on their own, and who wish to downsize from their large houses, as well as in certain circumstances where they cannot have a lift installed in their building. These large apartments could be of help to those Valletta couples who wish to start or expand their family.
The building known as the Biċċerija has a large area at its side that could be used for activities made especially for elderly Valletta residents.
The same proposal also provides support to those who depend on or need social services provided by the State; Meals on Wheels, nurses and carers, doctors, cleaners... all concentrated in one zone under one roof for everyone's convenience.
This would also be beneficial in the fight against loneliness that unfortunately many elderly people find themselves in. Through it they would be a support to each other. To date, the need for an elderly home has still not been addressed or implemented by the Government and the Opposition.
We will keep you informed of any developments.
Update: 01.06.2015
Unfortunately, the Biċċerija will be given for a purpose that, in our opinion, only helps commercial aspects. We feel that part of the plan will create a precedent of inconvenience in this zone which houses a large number of residents, the majority of them elderly. We will send another communication to the concerned entities to reconsider our proposal, and in case the project cannot be stopped, we will request that it at least be used for cultural purposes with less inconvenience to surrounding residents and the locality in general.
