The Old Fish Market

Proposal by Independent Social Movement ResidentiBeltin – 09/05/2011 © (Digital & Published Rights)

One of the proposals we presented to the Council and Members of Parliament through a letter to Parliament was for the old Fish Market to remain in the hands of the public while serving for the use of ferries and dgħajjes tal-pass; so that the few remaining owners/operators of these traditional boats are given the necessary encouragement to continue using this tradition - along with a cafeteria, part of the building reserved as an artistic space, tourist information offices and tickets related to bus and ferry services, public toilets as part of a plan to increase public toilets around Valletta, and a bus stop. All of this as a plan that serves both the public and visitors, especially providing shelter during the sun and rain seasons.

This proposal hits exactly what is needed for the locality, for Valletta residents, visitors - it protects the public coastline just as many other localities are experiencing this injustice. We were ready to give up the Fish Market in exchange for Evans. However, after various communications with representatives, no conclusion was reached.
