A building is not just a return on investment

When a public building changes hands, the first question should not be how much can be made from it. It should be what it can still give to the people around it.

Valletta needs places that hold a community together: a place to meet, to learn, to receive care, to make something, to be young, to grow old. A city cannot live on accommodation and consumption alone. If every useful space is measured only by its commercial return, residents are left with a beautiful shell and less of a life within it.

The real value of a building is sometimes the life it makes possible.
